THE MORPH GROUP
Formed in October 2003 The Morph Group of Contemporary Artists', now known as Morph Dynamic Crfeatives, first exhibition was at the Conkers Theme Park at Moira, near Swadlincote. A second series of four exhibitions quickly took place at Sharpe's Pottery Gallery also in Swadlincote. Subsequent successful group exhibitions have been held at The Brewhouse Gallery, Burton upon Trent, The Holywell Mill at Ashby de la Zouch and Pear Tree Farm Gallery near Matlock. The groups' name Morph, originates from the first exhibition at Conkers where the theme for the event was the metamorphosis and the regeneration of the area from that of coal mining, iron smelting and pottery to the re-forestation of the area of South Derbyshire and North Leicestershire.
The Group has strong links with the University of Derby, from which most of its members graduated with a fine art degree, and the groups's monthly meetings are still held on University premises. Group members are all professional or semi-professional practicing artists who exhibit their work as individuals as well as participating in group activities and members have found that group contacts have helped them to further their careers and widen their contact bases. Membership now stands at 12 artists selected for their diversity of work which compliments each other in the formation of exhibitions. One of Morph's criteria is to organise exhibitions for its members but also planning other functions such as critiques and visits to galleries. (Baltic Gallery and Biscuit Factory Newcastle on Tyne). One of the prime motivations for the group is to take contemporary art to unconventional places as well as galleries and exhibition centres and is constantly reviewing new sites for work.
"Morph" is currently engaged in an exhibition covering four sites with the Derby Museum and Art Gallery, exhibits ranging from paintings, sculpture and installation showing at four sites, the Silk Mill, Pickfords House, Pear Tree Farm Gallery and Derby Museum and Art Gallery. The exhibition will be held from 2 February to the end of March 2008.
New member candidates have to be nominated by an existing member and are asked to submit a CV for prior discussion before the applicant is invited for a final interview and presentation to the group.
